Here's How to Effectively Organize Your Garage

WSI ALM • March 25, 2024

Is your garage little more than stacks of junk, possibly with enough room to house a car? If so, you're far from alone. Too many people allow their garages to get out of hand, and they end up under-utilizing a space that could be far more useful.

However, even the messiest garage can be cleaned up and organized. Doing so might take a week or two, but it's well worth the effort because it will pay off for years to come.

We have a long history of helping people implement garage storage solutions like garage slatwall systems, and frequently help in cleaning up poorly organized spaces and beautifying garages by resurfacing garage floors. Here are some of our most important tips.

Seven Ways to Turn Your Garage into A Great Usable Space

1 - Get Rid of the Junk

As a rule of thumb, if there's something in your garage that's been there for over a year without being used, just get rid of it. You'll probably never need it again, and it's just taking up space.

If possible, hold a garage sale. The proceeds can help pay for any other upgrades you want to install.

2 - Move Unsafe or Wasteful Items out of Your Garage

There are a lot of things that really shouldn't be kept in your garage for reasons of health, safety, or efficiency. These include:

  • Propane Tanks - They're too easy to accidentally ignite. Propane should always be stored outside, on either concrete or naked dirt.
  • Paper Products - Old magazines, newspapers, documents, etc, will attract pest insects that eat plant matter. They can also attract rats and similar creatures who make nests of the paper.
  • Paint - Paint should be stored somewhere with heating & air conditioning since it can be ruined by extreme heat or cold.
  • Unfrozen food of any type, including pet food.  Do you want raccoons? This is how you get raccoons.
  • Freezers Maybe - Having a freezer in an space without heating will force it to work a lot harder and use more power. Don't keep a freezer in your garage unless you know you'll be making frequent use of it and are keeping the room heated in the cold temperatures.

3 - Don't Store Items on the Ground

Whatever garage storage solutions you choose to implement, they should be elevated. It's too easy for water to make it into a garage, not to mention the potential for various vehicle fluids to get spilled. Anything kept directly on the ground is at risk of damage.

If possible, even your tables and drawers and such should be slightly elevated, on inch-high legs, to prevent their bottoms from being damaged.

4 - Lock up Dangerous Chemicals

Certain chemicals such as cleaning products, pool acid, and similar things are best kept away from your main house. The garage is a good enough storage space for them. However, they shouldn't be sitting out in the open. Invest in a closet or other cabinetry with a locking mechanism so that they can be safely stored away when not in use. This goes double if you have children or inquisitive pets.

5 - Invest in Vertical Storage Systems

Slatwalls are one of your best friends in organizing a garage. They can hold a huge number of items while keeping those items close at hand and easily accessible. They can also hold up ladders and many tools, potentially adding even more vertical storage for a small initial investment.

6 - Make Use of Overhead Space

Garages almost always have more headroom than a typical interior space. Don't let that space go to waste! If there's sufficient overhead space, you might even look into adding overhead storage racks.

7 - Finish the Floor

If your garage still has a plain concrete slab for a floor, it should be finished. A resinous floor coating will add a lot of protection, making the floor stronger, as well as stain-resistant. In addition, a resinous floor coating can also be quite visually appealing, and make your garage nicer to work in.

8 - Categorize Your Items

Before you start putting everything away, it's important to categorize your items. Group similar items together, such as sports equipment, gardening tools, automotive supplies, and so on. This will help you determine what type of storage solutions you'll need.

9 - Prioritize Frequently Used Items

When deciding where to store your items, prioritize frequently used items by placing them in easily accessible locations. For example, you may want to store your gardening tools near the garage door so you can quickly grab them when you need them.

10 - Use Clear Containers

Instead of storing your items in cardboard boxes or opaque containers, use clear containers to make it easier to see what's inside. This will save you time when searching for a specific item and help you avoid rummaging through boxes.

11 - Label Everything

To take organization a step further, label everything. This will make it easier to find items and ensure that everything is put back in its proper place. Labeling can be as simple as using a marker on a container or investing in a label maker.

12 - Install Cabinets

Cabinets are another great way to maximize storage space in your garage and make the garage more attractive. This will help keep your items off the floor, organized, and dust-free.

13 - Create a Workspace

If you plan on using your garage as a workspace, be sure to create an area dedicated to your projects. This can be as simple as setting up a workbench with drawers for your tools. Having a designated workspace will help you stay organized and focused on your projects.

14 - Install Lighting

Garages can be dark and dreary places, which can make it difficult to find what you're looking for. Installing adequate lighting will not only make it easier to find your items but also create a safer workspace. You can install overhead lighting, task lighting, or even motion-sensor lighting to improve visibility.

15 - Consider Climate Control

If you plan on storing items in your garage that are sensitive to temperature and humidity, such as electronics or artwork, consider installing climate control. This can include adding insulation, a dehumidifier, a heater or even air conditioning. Climate control will help protect your items from damage and ensure they last longer.

16 - Maintain Organization

Once you've organized your garage, it's important to maintain it. Make it a habit to put items back in their proper place after use and avoid accumulating unnecessary items. Regularly declutter your garage to prevent it from becoming cluttered again.

Organizing your garage can be a daunting task, but it's worth the effort. By following these tips and investing in the right storage solutions, you can transform your garage into a usable space that meets your needs.

Keeping Garages Organized With Simple, Ongoing Habits

Organizing your garage isn't just a one-time project, it's an ongoing effort. After you've taken the time to declutter and put things in their proper place, you'll want to maintain the cleanliness and organization of your garage.

Regularly sweep and dust: Use a broom or leaf blower to clean the floors and surfaces of your garage. This will help keep dust and debris from accumulating and make it easier to spot any spills or leaks.

Put things back where they belong: After you've used something, make sure to put it back in its designated spot. This will prevent clutter from building up and make it easier to find things when you need them.

Label storage containers: Use labels or markers to identify what's inside your storage containers. This will help you quickly locate items when you need them.

By adopting these simple habits, you can maintain the cleanliness and organization of your garage and avoid the need for a major cleanup in the future.

Choosing a Garage Cabinet and Organization Company

If you're looking to upgrade your garage storage, consider working with a professional cabinet and organization company. These companies can help you design and install custom storage solutions that maximize your space and meet your specific needs.

Experience: Look for a company with a proven track record of successful garage storage installations. Ask for references and check online reviews to get an idea of their past work and customer satisfaction.

Expertise: Find a company that specializes in garage organization and storage solutions. They should have a deep understanding of the unique challenges of garage storage, such as dealing with moisture and the need for durable materials.

Customization: Every garage is different, so you'll want to work with a company that can create a custom storage solution tailored to your needs. Look for a company that offers a variety of materials, colors, and configurations to choose from.

Installation: Ask about the company's installation process. Do they handle everything from start to finish, including the removal of old storage solutions and cleanup? Will they work around your schedule and minimize disruptions to your daily routine? Will they remove your content, store it, and them replace your content?

Warranty: Make sure the company offers a warranty or guarantee on their products and installation. This will give you peace of mind that your investment is protected.

Durability is a key factor that homeowners and business owners alike should consider for any project. Garage Finisher’s Polyaspartic flooring is incredibly popular amongst Ohio homeowners and business owners due to its impressive strength and resilience, making it an ideal choice for a variety of environments. By the end of this blog, you'll understand why Garage Finisher stands out as the premier garage flooring provider. Exceptional Chemical Resistance One of the standout features of our “Forever Floor” Polyaspartic flooring is its remarkable chemical resistance. Unlike traditional flooring materials that can easily succumb to spills, chemicals and stains, our Polyaspartic flooring is designed to withstand harsh chemicals, road salt, oils, and solvents. This makes it an excellent choice for garages, warehouses, and industrial settings where exposure to such substances is common. Moreover, our flooring's ability to resist yellowing and degradation over time ensures that it maintains its aesthetic appeal, even in demanding environments. As a result, you can enjoy a beautiful, long-lasting floor without the worry of frequent replacements, re-sealing, or repairs. Strength and Flexibility Combined Garage Finisher’s Polyaspartic flooring is not only resistant to chemicals but also boasts impressive mechanical properties. Our flooring formula is known for its strength and flexibility, which allows it to endure heavy loads and impacts without cracking or chipping. Whether you’re parking heavy vehicles in your garage or hosting events in a commercial space, our Polyaspartic flooring can handle the pressure. The unique composition of our Polyaspartic flooring allows it to expand and contract with temperature fluctuations, making it less prone to damage compared to other flooring materials like epoxy which gets brittle over time and peels. This adaptability is crucial in Ohio, where we can experience significant temperature changes, ensuring that your flooring remains intact and functional for years to come. Long-lasting Performance and Easy Maintenance Another reason why our Polyaspartic flooring is considered durable is its long-lasting performance and low maintenance requirements. Once installed, this flooring will last for decades with minimal upkeep. Unlike traditional flooring options that may require frequent waxing or sealing, our Polyaspartic flooring only needs regular cleaning to maintain its appearance. Additionally, its seamless surface prevents dirt and debris from accumulating in cracks and crevices, making it easier to keep clean, unlike cheaper alternatives that do not fill the control joints making those floors harder to clean. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your space but also contributes to a healthier indoor environment. With our Polyaspartic flooring, you can enjoy a beautiful, durable floor without the hassle of extensive maintenance. If you have additional questions or would like to learn more about how our garage flooring solutions can benefit your space, don't hesitate to contact Garage Finisher today. Epoxy Flooring
By Mario Salwan November 14, 2024
You might assume that getting an epoxy flooring installed means you are getting a high-performance flooring solution, but that is simply not the case. Many homeowners and business owners often find themselves disappointed by second-rate options that fail to deliver long-term durability and aesthetics. Let’s dive into the reasons why you shouldn't compromise on quality and what makes Garage Finisher’s Polyaspartic flooring a worthwhile investment. The True Value of Quality Garage Flooring Investing in high-quality garage flooring can significantly impact the longevity and appearance of your floors. Second-rate options may seem appealing due to their lower price tags, but they often come with hidden costs. Inferior materials can lead to peeling, cracking, and discoloration, ultimately requiring costly repairs or replacements sooner than expected. In contrast, Garage Finisher’s premium Polyaspartic flooring is designed to withstand heavy traffic, resist stains, and endure the rigors of daily use. We choose the highest quality products, to ensure that your flooring investment pays off in the long run. Why Quality Matters in Polyaspartic Flooring When selecting your garage flooring, it's crucial to understand the difference between various grades of materials. Our formulations contain superior polyaspartic resins and hardeners, providing enhanced adhesion and durability. This means your floors will not only look better but will also last longer. Low-grade options, on the other hand, may use epoxy that compromises the integrity of the flooring. This can lead to issues such as bubbling or chipping, which detracts from the visual appeal, functionality of your space, and longevity of the floor. The Aesthetic Appeal of Premium Polyaspartic Flooring Beyond durability, the aesthetic appeal of Polyaspartic flooring is another compelling reason to avoid second-rate options. Our quality flooring comes in a variety of colors, finishes, and designs, allowing you to customize your space to match your style. Whether you prefer a sleek, modern look or a more traditional aesthetic, high-quality Garage Finisher can enhance your environment. Second-rate flooring options often lack the versatility, slip-resistance, and visual appeal of premium products. Don’t settle for bland or unattractive flooring when you can have a stunning finish that elevates your entire space. If you have additional questions or would like to explore the best options for garage flooring tailored to your needs, contact Garage Finisher today. Our team is ready to help you make the best choice for your flooring project!

Not all garage flooring systems are created equal, and the difference in quality can affect the longevity and durability of your investment. While some companies cut corners with cheaper materials and lackluster service, Garage Finisher stands out for our commitment to excellence. In this blog, we’ll explore why Garage Finisher's Polyaspartic garage flooring system is superior to the Other Guys, and why it should be your first choice. Superior Materials for Long-Lasting Results At Garage Finisher, we use a proprietary 5-layer Polyaspartic flooring system that provides unmatched strength, flexibility, and durability. Polyaspartic flooring is a relatively new product, first developed in the 1980s and gaining widespread popularity in the 2000s. Its advantages over traditional epoxy are clear—epoxy tends to be brittle and prone to peeling, especially under hot tires, and it often requires frequent maintenance and reapplication. Polyaspartic, on the other hand, is designed to withstand extreme temperatures, high impact, and heavy traffic without peeling or cracking. Garage Finisher also fills in the joints of your garage floor seamlessly, something that epoxy systems often fail to do. The Other Guys, on the other hand, tend to rely on older, less durable materials like epoxy that can’t hold up to the same wear and tear. Their flooring systems often begin to peel or crack shortly after installation, especially in environments where tire friction is an issue. Hassle-Free Installation and Service Garage Finisher takes the stress out of garage flooring installation with a streamlined process that puts the customer first. We go above and beyond by removing all your garage contents for you, and storing them in our enclosed trailer at no additional cost. We even take care of disposing of any items you no longer need. After we complete the installation of your Polyaspartic flooring, we return your garage contents to the garage the very next day. That means you can start enjoying your newly finished garage without the long wait time. In comparison, The Other Guys often require you to move your own garage contents and makes you wait five days or longer for the floor to fully dry before you can return your belongings. This not only wastes your time but can also cause unnecessary strain and inconvenience. Choosing Garage Finisher means a fast, efficient installation process with minimal disruption to your routine. Unmatched Garage Flooring Warranties for Peace of Mind One of the biggest advantages of choosing Garage Finisher is our "No Exclusions" lifetime, transferable warranty. This comprehensive warranty covers any issues that might arise, with no hidden terms or annual re-sealing requirements. With over 15 years of experience and thousands of successfully installed floors, we stand by our work and are proud of our A+ rating. The Other Guys, on the other hand, often offer warranties that come with multiple exclusions and stipulations. These limited warranties often require expensive annual re-sealing or maintenance to remain valid, which can add significant costs over time. If a company needs a page of exclusions for their warranty, it’s a red flag—they’re expecting their floors to fail. Our team is here to answer any questions you may have and help you get started on your garage flooring upgrade. Don’t settle for the other guys— choose Garage Finisher for the best garage flooring and customer experience in Cleveland and the surrounding areas of Ohio.
